After the statement made by Yash Raj Films, Ajay Devgn responded by saying he only managed to book 600 single-screens for Son of Sardaar and would take legal action if not allotted more. He denied having anything against Shahrukh Khan and said that distributors cannot be allowed to enter into an arrangement which adversely affects competition. Yash Raj Films entered into a tie-in arrangement with exhibitors that made it compulsory for them to show an untitled Yash Chopra film on Diwali and keep it in cinemas for at least two weeks thereafter. Devgn claimed that this violated provisions of the 2002 Indian Competition Act.[24][25] Senior film critic Vinod Mirani said that YRF's move of blocking single screens may not help much. "Single screens watchers will have more affinity towards an action film such as SOS. Moreover, JTHJ's length and the fact that music has still not picked up, will not go down well with the movie goers."[26]The Competition Commission dismissed the case against Yash Raj Films on 6 November 2012.[27] Ajay Devgn has appealed to Competition Appellate Tribunal after rejection of petition against Yash Raj Films.[28] The Competition Appellate tribunal bench headed by chairman Justice V. S. Sirpurkar refused Devgn's stay against Jab Tak Hai Jaan but stated that the case against Yash Raj Films will be reviewed again. Both films were released on 13 November 2012.[29][30]
Son of Sardaar received mixed reviews. Taran Adarsh of Bollywood Hungama gave it a score of 4 out of 5 stars and said "Son of Sardaar is for lovers of hardcore masala movies. If you liked Wanted, Dabangg and Rowdy Rathore, chances are you will relish Son of Sardaar as well. The North Indian audiences in particular and those residing abroad will be simply delighted by this chatpata, masaledaar fare."[31] Gayatri Sankar of Zee News gave it 3 out of 5 stars while commenting "Certain portions are a bit of a drag, but the comic sequences will make up for the monotony. The cast has put up a good show. Overall, SOS is worth a watch, a complete family entertainer."[32] Rediff gave 2 out of 5 and stated Son of Sardaar has a lot for the masses but it lacks a good story.[33] Filmfare gave 2 out of 5 stars and stated "Comedy is more than just gags and slapstick. Sadly SOS gets it wrong."[34] Rajeev Masand of CNN-IBN gave 2 out of 5 stars and stated Son of Sardaar "is only sporadically entertaining, and peddles the same tired stereotypes of Punjab and Sikhs. A cameo by Salman Khan, sadly, doesn't make up for the film's many flaws."[35] Hindustan Times gave the film 2 out of 5 stars, describing it as "exhausting, painfully loud and way too long, with too few laughs",[36] while the Telegraph stated that it was "run-of-the-mill", but that it could be a "guilty pleasure" for some viewers.[37] Like the Hindustan Times, IBNLive gave the movie 2 out of 5,[38] with a slightly lower grade coming from Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV, who rated the film 1.5 out 5, stated that it was "A tangled mess that has no way of working its way around the sloppy screenplay."[39] The Hindu stated that there's nothing more torturous than watching an unfunny film that's trying so hard to be funny.[40]

SON OF SARDAAR is the remake of a Telugu film, but the Hindi avatar is set in an entirely different precinct. Nonetheless, what remains unaffected are the set of regulations that make masala entertainers work. Be it the hero's gallant introduction, his breaking into a power-packed dialogue or confronting the opponent, also bashing up the rogues, like we swat flies and mosquitoes, romancing the heroine amidst the mayhem... every significant episode has been integrated with the objective of eliciting whistles, catcalls, roars and ovation. SON OF SARDAAR stays most faithful to the ideology of providing unabashed entertainment, while logic, expectedly, takes a backseat. But who's expecting a movie with smart repartee and loads of enlightenment anyway?
With a skeletal plot to play around with, SON OF SARDAAR may give you the feeling of deje vu, but let's face it, it needs tremendous skills to pen a screenplay that never lets you lose focus. Dhir and screenwriter Robin Bhatt ensure that they throw every trick in the book to serve a no-holds-barred entertainer, with 70 mm herogiri at its best, to the amusement-seeking moviegoer. That's one of the prime reasons why SON OF SARDAAR hits the right notes.
Like GHAJINI, WANTED, DABANGG, SINGHAM and ROWDY RATHORE, SON OF SARDAAR pays homage to the cinema of 1980s and 1990s. The trend of creating desi movies that emphasize on entertainment has already gathered steam and SON OF SARDAAR is one more big-budget extravaganza that aims at wooing the Indian mass audience. Sure, it's brash, outrageous, wacky, exaggerated, irrational... so what? As long as it's fun to watch, one shouldn't grumble. While the first hour is breezy and thoroughly enjoyable, the narrative dips in the second half as the focus shifts to romance, with vengeance taking a backseat. But the penultimate portions, especially the combat between Sanjay and Ajay, is the hallmark of the enterprise, with the film concluding on another euphoric note -- the song 'Po Po' -- which features Salman.
On the whole, SON OF SARDAAR is for lovers of hardcore masala movies. If you liked WANTED, DABANGG and ROWDY RATHORE, chances are you will relish SON OF SARDAAR as well. The North Indian audiences in particular and those residing abroad will be simply delighted by this chatpata, masaledaar fare. A wholesome entertainer in the festive period. Go, have a blast!

A heavy-duty subject presented in a documentary style with a touch of spy-thriller elements sprinkled on it.The old protagonist's character was the only one that was designed properly, everything else was just accessories. If the whole movie would've traveled with this old man's character, it might've become one of the decently made ones but the opportunity was spoiled with a useless heroine, and a baseless plot, especially with the main protagonists' characterization design. There were a few emotional parts tried but nothing worked outmusic/songs/BGM wasn't that enjoyable and didn't add much value to the filmthe KGF style parallel story-telling kinda screenplay didn't work at all, it felt so artificial and didn't jell well with the content despite making revelations that both father & son have the same behaviors & mannerismsand we cannot stop the thought of comparing it against Cobra with respect to the multiple getups of the protagonistbut overall it is a good enough one for a one-time watch for sure.
PS Mithran once again followed his template , protagonist against Corporate monster , this time he tried in spy thriller genre . Story was predictable , but movie wasn't boring . First half , above average with some commercial elements and good intermission block . Second half was good with some interesting action block , Climax was like last minute school home work , bit rushed and clumsy direction . VFX was poor . Message they were trying to convey was good , but they tried to spoon feed it , at some point it felt cringe . Action sequence were good . Karthi well suited in his different avatar . Comedy worked well in few places , especially Rithu Rocks did a great job . Antagonist was weak , jus felt like Cheetah Siva movie kinda villian . Overall a decent commercial action thriller , despite few flaws its worth watchable . 2ff7e9595c
