Foresight for Science, Technology and Innovation (Science, Technology and Innovation Studies) downlo

However, there are still white spaces that need to be brought into discussion. These include among others practical case studies and comparative analyses (with the specific focus on SMEs) on how Foresight actually impacts day-to-day decision-making and enables long-term innovation in companies. With regard to the impact of Foresight on innovation policies, undertaking studies of the connections between Foresight and innovation catalysing practices on national, European or beyond EU dimensions would certainly be worthwhile.

Rebranding Foresight itself, underlining its practical value (especially to corporate beneficiaries and policy decision-makers) and benefits stemming from i.e. trend monitoring, roadmapping, future-oriented technology analysis, technology intelligence, innovation creation etc.

Out of the seven papers selected for publication in this Topical Collection, five contributions discuss the issue of business Foresight; whereas three papers propose methodological solutions and underline technology-related outcomes, developed and tested within Foresight projects commissioned by public entities. The papers are illustrated with the following case studies:

The contribution by Abdul Yaver, Jenny Marcela Sanchez-Torres, Miguel Ángel Amórtegui and Lucas Giraldo Ríos J.M. Sánchez-Torres, M.A. Amórtegui, L. Giraldo-Ríos aims to identify and validate trends related to advanced technology services, and present strategic lines of action to the Colombian National Research and Education Network: RENATA. The described case study is a civil, non-profit, private corporation responsible for the implementation and appropriation of new generation data network, providing services and facilitating the connection of Colombian institutes to the research and academic network of centres in the world. The described Foresight process had three stages: pre-foresight, Foresight and post-foresight. The methods applied included: country benchmarking, a survey, international expert consultations and structural analysis. The result of Foresight included: the list of necessary updates of the existing services offered by the network; the list of promising development directions along with detailed operational recommendations that will enable the introduction of new services by RENATA in the future.

It is not enough for EU research and innovation to generate innovations that don't already exist. Research and innovation policy must anticipate and prepare for changes in science, technology, innovation, society, economies and politics.

As part of its recommendations, the BOHEMIA study identified 19 likely future scenarios with disruptive implications and associated priority directions for EU research and innovation. All these reports are available to download below.

The National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics (NCSES), at the U.S. National Foundation, is 1 of 14 major statistical agencies in the federal government, of which at least 5 collect relevant information on science, technology, and innovation activities in the United States and abroad. The America COMPETES Reauthorization Act of 2010 expanded and codified NCSES's role as a U.S. federal statistical agency. Important aspects of the agency's mandate include collection, acquisition, analysis, and reporting and dissemination of data on research and development trends, on U.S. competitiveness in science, technology, and research and development, and on the condition and progress of U.S. science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education.

Improving Measures of Science, Technology and Innovation: Interim Report examines the status of the NCSES's science, technology, and innovation (STI) indicators. This report assesses and provides recommendations regarding the need for revised, refocused, and newly developed indicators designed to better reflect fundamental and rapid changes that are reshaping global science, technology and innovation systems. The book also determines the international scope of STI indicators and the need for developing new indicators that measure developments in innovative activities in the United States and abroad, and Offers foresight on the types of data, metrics and indicators that will be particularly influential in evidentiary policy decision-making for years to come.

Recognising the pivotal role of science, technology and innovation for food systems transformation, the Science Days, organized by the Scientific Group of the UN Food Systems Summit and facilitated and hosted by FAO, offer an important opportunity to support the agenda setting process with scientific evidence and perspectives.
